Hockey is a huge sport in Pinedale, Wyoming and you can watch the local leagues compete at the Sublette County Ice Arena. Check the door or call ahead to see when games are scheduled. You’re sure to see some hockey going on at the lakes — you might be able to join in on a pickup game, too.

Fremont Lake
For the most beautiful backcountry ice skating you can imagine, head to Fremont Lake outside of Pinedale, Wyoming.
Just 3.2 miles away from town, the second largest natural lake in Wyoming has plenty of room for speed skating, ice skating, hockey, snowmobiling, or just standing on the ice and admiring the views of the Wind River Mountain Range covered in snow.
Conditions are perfect, with smooth ice for practicing twirls, spins, jumps, and speed skating. if you’re not great on skates, this naturally formed glacial lake is a great spot for cross-country skiing, too! Be sure to pack a thermos with a hot drink, a blanket for changing into your gear, and snacks for after you’ve skated to your heart’s content.
Half Moon Lake
In a sweet, forested area about seven miles from Pinedale lies Half Moon Lake, a popular winter spot for ice skaters.
With a separate hockey rink on the surface of Half Moon Lake, this is a great spot to look for a pickup game. Feel free to bring a chair, a blanket, and a thermos of hot chocolate if you just want to watch.
This lake has plenty of room for skaters of all abilities — from beginners to professionals. The views while skating are epic, with white capped mountains and trees dusted with snow. The ice is ready when it gets to 17 inches thick or more, which will hold people and snowmobiles. Check in with the Forest Service, Game, and Fish Office to see if the conditions are prime for skating time.
