Roads & Driving
Sublette County is accessed by two US highways, 189 and 191. These roads are two lane highways with few grades and nearly straight alignment in excellent condition that often travel through remote areas with large distances between towns. Food, fuel and road services are readily available in towns. Make sure you have adequate fuel to reach your destination.
From the Southwest (Salt Lake City, Evanston):
Travelers coming north from Salt Lake City will come via Interstate 80. Eleven miles east of Evanston, take US Highway 189 north through Kemmerer and LaBarge to Big Piney.
From the North (Jackson Hole, Idaho Falls, Yellowstone):
Travelers from Idaho will come into Wyoming via Highway 89 through the Snake River Canyon, and then take the Alpine Junction onto US Highway 191 and travel south to Pinedale or Big Piney. Travelers from Jackson or Yellowstone stay on Highway 191 south to Pinedale or Big Piney via Highway 189.
From the Southeast (Rock Springs, Cheyenne, Denver):
Travelers from the east will usually come in on Interstate 80. To reach Sublette County, turn north on Highway 191 at Rock Springs and travel 100 miles north to Pinedale. Take Highway 351, 80 miles north of Farson to reach Highway 189 and Big Piney.
From the West (Riverton, Lander, Casper):
Travelers from central Wyoming will cross the Continental Divide via South Pass to Farson, then turn north on Highway 191 to Pinedale. Or turn west on Highway 351, 40 miles north of Farson to reach Highway 189 and Big Piney. South Pass is frequently closed in the winter.
Services Between Towns
Between Rock Springs and Jackson, or Kemmerer and Pinedale, you'll find several small towns and convenience stores with gas, restrooms and snack food (in Eden, Farson, Boulder, Bondurant and Daniel). But these are open only during daytime hours, and some are only open seasonally (in the summer). Big Piney/Marbleton, and Pinedale are good halfway points and public restrooms, restaurants and lodging are available. The American Legion Park in Pinedale (turn right off US 191 on Lake Avenue) has public restroom facilities and is a beautiful spot for a picnic on scenic Pine Creek. There are some services at the smaller towns along the way. Visitor information is available at the kiosks at the Marbleton Town Hall, Big Piney Library, The Elkhorn in Bondurant, and the main Visitor Center on US 191 in Downtown Pinedale.
Winter Driving
During the winter, be sure to check the Wyoming Highway Department's online road report to see if there are any winter driving hazards reported when you are ready to leave on your trip. This is because winter storms and blowing snow, or avalanches in the Hoback and Snake River Canyons, can cause road closures. During severe storms, the highway department closes gates on certain highways so traffic cannot proceed when winter conditions are too dangerous. Gates are located on the Interstate 80 outside of Rock Springs, and on US 191 north of Pinedale just past the Hwy 189 turn-off at the Daniel Junction. Services at these gated locations are minimal, but typically there is food, gas and restrooms. During severe winter storms, you could be stranded there for hours or days. Winter storms can bring blowing & drifting snow and complete "white-out" conditions where you can't see the road or even 2 feet in front of you. When traveling in the winter, be prepared with chains or appropriate snow tires for winter travel, and carry winter survival gear for emergencies on the road. Violations of winter storm road closures are dangerous and punishable by fines. The Road and Travel Information site on the web is http://dot.state.wy.us.
